The tension broke when Cipher revealed the existence of Dom's son on her phone, immediately coercing him to steal an EMP device from a Berlin military outpost for her. This betrayal led Hobbs to be arrested in a high-security prison alongside Deckard Shaw. Cipher sent Dom to New York City to retrieve a nuclear football from the Russian Minister of Defense using his 1971 Plymouth GTX. When the team intercepted him, Dom forced Letty to return the football after Connor Rhodes nearly killed her. In retaliation for their interference, Cipher had Rhodes kill Elena Neves in front of Dom, threatening to kill the baby next if he failed again. Dom infiltrated a Russian base to activate a nuclear submarine with the EMP device, allowing Cipher to hijack it. The team eventually intercepted the sub's weapons and drove toward the gates to stop it from leaving. Deckard Shaw faked his death earlier but returned with Owen to rescue Dom's son from Cipher's plane. Once the child was safe, Dom turned on Cipher, killing Rhodes. Cipher fired an infrared homing missile at Dom's Charger, but he lured it into destroying the trailing submarine before she escaped by parachute.
